College Essay Coaching with Sophia
Need help with college essays?
As a writing coach, I've guided hundreds of students through the brainstorming, drafting, writing, and editing process. Colleges want to hear your unique story in your unique voice; however, it can be hard to know how tell it, what to leave in, and what to leave out. I can help you write a compelling and coherent essay that's authentically your own.
Sessions will default to be conducted via Zoom; however, I'm flexible to what is most effective and convenient for the student. Edits will be shared between me and the student via Google Docs.
Session Structure
Each student will start with a standard 30-minute consultation where I'll get to know them and perform a needs assessment. At the end of the consultation, we'll decide the best course of action together, choosing either a package or a customized session plan.
There are two parts to each session: review and coaching.
Review occurs before coaching when I read over the student's essay in detail, making specific notes about word choice and idea structure. This takes about 15 minutes depending on project length. The review can be done either in-session, or to maximize session time, it can be done out of session for $10 per review.
Coaching is informed by my review and involves collaborative conversation with the student as we apply the next round of revisions. Carefully selected writing exercises will ensure they understand each change and retain the skills for future projects. I will also leave them with notes on best next steps. This process can repeat as many times as necessary.

My background
I'm currently a writer for Hearst publications and a communications consultant for the H.E. Butt Foundation, with a B.A. in rhetoric and writing from UT Austin. While attending UT, I worked at the University Writing Center as a writing consultant for students.
I assisted dozens of students with a variety of written assignments, such as English essays, Biology research papers, and medical school and law school personal statements. My approach to coaching writers is not to tell them what to write, but teach them how to write, and leave them with transferrable skills.
As a recent college graduate (c/o '25) and Incarnate Word High School alum (c/o '21), I remember the unique pressure of writing college essays very well. I understand how intimidating the process can be, but I also believe everyone can be a great writer with the right guidance and support!
Let's find the best approach for you.
It can be challenging to identify how much assistance a student needs with their essay(s).
I've provided three packages to choose from, each designed for students at different stages of the writing process, and applicable to various kinds of application materials.
Choosing a package is not required; I'd also be happy to discuss a personalized plan, or simply book appointments one at a time.

I'll respond to each form by emailing the student and their parent(s). That way, we can discuss details together and make sure I'm the right coach for you.
